Message from Lynnita

In 1996 I started an oral history project to document the memoirs of Korean War veterans.  Considering the lack of readily accessible, centralized veterans' stories about their Korean War experiences, there seemed to be little public interest in this war from its veterans' viewpoint, even though its battles, fatalities, wounded casualties, emotional trauma, financial cost, anguish to individual families, and place in world history are extremely (extremely!) significant.  The response to the Korean War Educator is proof that there is, indeed, public interest in the Korean War.  Educators, scholars, news reporters, veterans, and veterans' families daily seek an understanding of the Korean War through this important website.  The most popular page of the Korean War Educator is Memoirs.

This project began in conjunction with a Korean War exhibit in the Douglas County Museum in Tuscola, Illinois.  I am the director of that museum and I have always been its exhibit coordinator.  In 1996, veterans' requests for a short-term Korean War exhibit were granted by the museum's board of trustees.  As the exhibit coordinator it was my duty to help create an exhibit that would educate the public about the Korean War, yet I personally knew nothing about it.  In order to understand this war that I knew zero about, I began to talk with Korean War veterans and interview them via cassette recordings.  Even after the exhibit ended, I continued to do the taped interviews because by that time every aspect of the Korean War fascinated me.  I am still fascinated.

The recordings have amassed through the years until now there are well over 300 tapes loaded with first-hand accounts of personal experiences and commentary on Korean War history from the mouths of the veterans who served in it and family members who were impacted by it.  For the most part, these tapes are yet to be transcribed because transcribing them has proved to be a difficult task.  It isn't an "impossible" job since I know how to transcribe.  My niece, Buffy Toppy in Jonesboro, Arkansas, has also lovingly helped me with some of the transcribing.  However, it is a task that two people working in their "free time" absolutely cannot accomplish in a timely manner. The memoirs are more accurate if the veterans are still alive to edit their completed memoirs.  Equally important, the veterans who participated in this project truly deserve to see how their memoir contribution, and that of so many other Korean War veterans, have collectively formed one of the most historic first-hand accounts of an American-fought war.  Unfortunately, with Korean War veterans now all over 70 years of age, time is running out for them to see the end result of this massive oral history project.

The KWE does not have the financial means to hire someone to transcribe all of these full length taped interviews (three to seven hours in length each).  It is a dilemma not yet resolved by the Korean War Educator.

Transcription Price Quote

(1) The following is a price quote for tape transcription from a professional transcribing service based in Nebraska.  The quote is comparable to prices charged by other transcribing services across the United States.

"We charge an hourly rate for the time it takes us to do a given job.  In the case of transcription, we charge $30 per hour for our time and use published industry standards as guidelines in billing.  Tapes such as you describe can take from four and a half times the length of the tape to six times the length of the tape to transcribe, resulting in a charge of $135 to $180 per tape-recorded hour.  (On rare occasions it can be slightly more.)  So, for 200 tapes at one hour each at $135, the low end of the entire project would be $27,000 or the high end (200 x 90 min x $180) $54,000, with the reality probably being somewhere in the middle of that range, say $40,000."

(2) The following is a price quote for tape transcription from a freelance transcriber who contacted the KWE in January 2008:

"I could do it for $90/per audio tape... so a 90-100 minute tape is $90.00. I cannot remember how many recordings you have, or when you would need them by, but if it is something that you do not need a quick turnaround on, but rather a rolling turnaround of tapes over the course of a couple of months, then maybe I could give you a flat rate for the whole project."

The following section shows the magnitude of the KWE oral history project.  Note the vast number of tapes (over 375--175 more than mentioned in the first price quote above--and the KWE tapes are each 90-100 minutes, not 60 minutes in length) waiting to be transcribed.

If any KWE reader would like to sponsor the transcribing of any of the as-yet un-transcribed tapes owned by the KWE or the Douglas County Museum, please contact Lynnita.  The KWE is also open to other valid solutions to this serious problem.  We call it a "serious problem" because we firmly believe that the only people who can tell the next generations about the harsh realities of the Korean War are the veterans who served in it themselves.  The Korean War Educator and the Douglas County Museum in Tuscola, Illinois combined have holdings of some 3,375 hours of un-transcribed Korean War memoirs.  What an amazing, untapped historical resource about the Korean War.

Perhaps our readers do not have the financial means to personally sponsor the transcribing of an interview, but they do have knowledge of/influence with possible funding sources.  If so, you can help expand public knowledge of the Korean War by encouraging those funding sources to assist in the financing of the transcription of these historical tape recordings.
