While this picture looks rather posed (which it was), this does give an idea
of how many men it took to operate an 81mm mortar. This was the actual
setup with protective sandbags all around. During the battle for Triangle Hill
our mortars fired continuously all night long to deny the Chinese access to
our holdings. The mortars were always grouped together while I was there.
The rifle companies had their own mortars(60 mm) for closer in action.
