USS Sproston II DD-577 - commissioned in May 1943 under a Commander Stickney. A most decorated ship, she received 5 battle stars for WWII, one for Korean, and three for Vietnam service. Sproston on 29 January 1944 was the first US ship to enter Subic Bay since the Japanese invasion of the Philippine Island. On many occasions enemy aircraft were shot down. She was used for invasions, patrols and was damaged several times. On June 28 while near Saipan and heading for home and overhaul, she sank a Japanese submarine after alluding torpedoes. Here the ship sails into Australian waters. Arrived July 14 1945 in San Francisco for overhaul and repairs in January 1946 she was placed out of commission. Sproston II returned for action in Korea in 1950, and later in Vietnam. Placed out of commission again in 1968 Sproston II was sold for scrap to a Taiwan yard. Her radar antennae were reportedly used in scenes for the movie Pearl Harbor.
